Key Stage 3

Drama

Overview

The course is designed to enable students to understand the nature of performing arts and the importance and influence of dance, music and drama in everyone’s life. Students are encouraged to explore their own emotions and feelings as well as those of the people around them.  To reflect upon how their behaviour has impacted their education and how they can better understand themselves and others.

How will I be assessed

End of topic assessment once a term.

What will I learn

Students will learn basic communication skills, gesture, speech, vocal intonation, and movement. They will study at least one play, discuss, analyse and evaluate it. They will learn about the various elements, styles and mediums of drama. They will focus on one or two genres such as Mask, Film and Spoken Word

Skills and Knowledge

Students will develop their ability to speak and listen, read facial expressions and social cues and to understand personas.

Students will develop the understanding and skills needed to appreciate and evaluate powerful influences in entertainment, TV, film, and music.

Students are taught skills to enhance their conversational and collaborative skills as well as develop ability to predict outcomes, consider consequences and broaden empathy. Students will develop their literacy skills.

Key Stage 4

Course

Level 1 Award in the Arts / Qualification No. 501/0081/6

Overview

This qualification is designed for pupils who want an introduction to Acting, Music, and Performance. The course is vocational, and project based. The qualification will appeal to pupils who wish to pursue a career in the Arts and Entertainment sector or progress to further study.

How will I be assessed

Learners can work at their own pace for this qualification, they record their progress in an arts log or portfolio. This provides the evidence for the adviser to assess and for the moderator to validate. Arts logs and portfolios can be created in any format. Learners can use written, visual and digital methods to record work for their evidence.

To achieve a Bronze Arts Award, young people collect evidence of their experiences of: 

  • Developing their interests, knowledge and skills through actively participating in any art form
  • Experience of at least one arts event/experience as an audience member and their review of that event/experience
  • Researching the career and work of an artist or craftsperson that inspires them
  • Experience of passing on an arts skill

Pupils will have one opportunity to resubmit. The qualification is graded Pass/Fail. This qualification is working at the same standard as GCSE grades 3–1.

  • Evaluation skills; how to be a critical consumer of art and media
  • How to work collaboratively as well as independent learning, working to deadlines  
  • How to employ problem solving and research skills, efficient use of resources.

Course

Level 2 Award in the Arts

Overview

This qualification is designed for pupils who want to develop their skills in and knowledge and understanding of Acting, Music, and Performance. The course is vocational, and project based. The qualification will appeal to pupils who wish to pursue a career in the Arts and Entertainment sector or progress to further study.

How will I be assessed

Learners can work at their own pace for this qualification, they record their progress in an arts log or portfolio. This provides the evidence for the adviser to assess and for the moderator to validate. Art logs and portfolios can be created in any format. Learners can use written, visual, and digital methods to record work for their evidence. To pass Unit 1 and Unit 2 of Silver Arts Award, learners are required to create an individual arts portfolio that demonstrates how they meet all of the following requirements:

Unit 1: Arts practice and pathways

  • Identify and plan an arts challenge (part A)
  • Implement and review the arts challenge (part B)
  • Review arts events/experiences (part C)
  • Undertake arts research (part D)

Unit 2: Arts leadership

  • Identify leadership role and plan the project’s aims (part A)
  • Plan the practical issues (part B)

Deliver the project

  • Effective arts leadership (part C)
  • Working effectively with others (part D)

Review the project

  • Review the project and development of leadership skills (part E)

What will I learn

  • An understanding of the career development of arts practitioners and the ways in which they work within their art form
  • How to participate in arts provision
  • What future education, career pathways and opportunities are available in their chosen art form
  • Knowledge and understanding of the art form
  • An understanding of the nature and purpose of a review
  • How to review an arts event/experience using language appropriate to the art form
  • Where and how to share their review with others
